5 REASONS YOU DON’T NEED VITAMIN SUPPLEMENTS | Bender's Gym

Are the Flinstones vitamins from your childhood haunting your dreams? “Eat me! How could you possibly stay healthy and strong without jamming me down your throat!?” Fred might be saying while Bam Bam takes his club to the raisins in your oatmeal (Hey, dreams are weird. I had to make this realistic.) Whether you grew up with vitamins or not, you’ll see an endless barrage of marketing for vitamin supplements as you pursue new levels of health and fitness. But how many of them are worth stocking up your shelves with?

According to a study done by Harvard Medical School, actual benefits from many of these multivitamins are doubtful.

REASONS YOU MAY NOT NEED VITAMIN SUPPLEMENTS AT ALL:

1) WOMEN WHO TOOK MULTIVITAMINS DIDN’T HAVE A LOWER DEATH RATE

In one of their studies of 161,808 women, Harvard discovered that those who faithfully took multivitamins didn’t have any less of a death rate than those who didn’t. It also showed that they were just as likely to develop issues like cardiovascular disease and various cancers. Ugh!

2) SOME SUPPLEMENTS MAY EVEN BE HARMFUL

Harvard Medical School goes on to explain that a Cochrane Collaboration review uncovered that people who were given supplements of vitamins A, E, and Beta Carotene had a higher death rate.

3) MANY FOODS CAN PROVIDE ALL NUTRIENTS YOU NEED

So with research showing that many vitamin supplements are actually a waste of time, what’s to be done? Start at the source where all the vitamins come from in the first place! The best place to get vitamins and nutrients are from nutrient-rich foods. Avocados, greens, bell peppers, brussel sprouts, salmon, eggs, berries…all of these are great sources of vitamins!

4) VITAMIN-RICH FOODS ARE EASY TO ACCESS

While you might have to hunt down a specialized health-food store for a truly beneficial vitamin supplement, most of the foods listed above can be found in a grocery store right around the corner.

5) QUICK & EASY IS OFTEN THE WORST ROUTE

You might be thinking, “but I don’t have time to prepare meals with nutrient-rich foods.” Buck up bucko! The Jetsons are a myth! We’ll never get the fuel we need for our bodies just by taking a pill. The best route is almost NEVER the easy route. You have to decide if the body you live in is worth some time and effort, and if it is, planning better meals with more vitamins involved is a necessary step. After all, you only get one body to steward, and you’re worth it!
